"Clearly it was weakened from our efforts earlier," Mr. Ploss said. "I doubt that her little act would have worked otherwise."

"She passed the test," Ms. Mudcliff said. "You watched the same as us."

Kandice sat in the Council Room for over ten minutes listening to Mr. Ploss, Ms. Mudcliff, and Stephen argue about her performance. They were supposed to discuss what they would do next with the prisoners. Technically, it was supposed to be left up to Kandice with regards to the other two, but the one that had been feeding on humans was condemned to death before she'd stepped foot in there.

His choices had insured he would die, but what about the others?

Stephen butted in, "Can we come back to the issue at hand? What are we going to do with Them? Kandice confirmed that one of them has been feeding off humans, but what of the other two?"

This led to more bickering between Mr. Ploss and Ms. Mudcliff. Kandice had heard enough of them debating her merits.

"The other two have to be let go," Kandice said. "The one that's been feeding on humans can be killed."

"We're all agreed that he dies," Mr. Ploss said. "But I'm not going to stand by while two of Them are set free to do the same."

"They haven't fed on anyone," Kandice said.

"So, they say," Mr. Ploss leaned towards her across the table. "How do you know they're not lying to you?"

Kandice tried to think of a retort, but there wasn't one. She had no way to prove they hadn't been feeding on humans, but she'd interrogated them, and looked into their eyes. She believed they were telling the truth. They hadn't fed on a human. She knew it. What she didn't know is what that meant from Aether Walkers in general.

If these two kids were harmless. How many more Aether Walkers were out there harmless?

"See," Mr. Ploss said. "Even she can't defend them when pressed. They're guilty by being, and must be destroyed. My family has been killing Them since time in memorial. I'll not stand by and watch this."

"You have no authority here," Ms. Mudcliff spoke in a stern voice a mother might use on a child. "This is my territory, and the Council has given me full jurisdiction to run it as I see fit. I agreed to host you and Mr. Moore out of good faith.

"Your charters both agreed that it would be in an advisory capacity, and nothing more. I'm grateful for you both coming, and value your input." She looked Mr. Ploss straight in the eyes without blinking, "But you will not threaten me, or make demands. Understood?"

Mr. Ploss didn't say anything, but he did lean back in his chair and lower his head in acknowledgment.

"Now," Ms. Mudcliff said. "I would like to hear what Kandice thinks is the best course of action."

"Umm, first you should kill the one that's been feeding off humans. Then the other two should be drugged and dropped off at their house.
